We would recommend that you choose a good size for your building lot allowing you to build your home adequately whilst also maintaining privacy.  Building costs are approx. $US65 -100 per square foot ($US650- 950 per square meter) depending on the standard and materials used.

To stay, live and / or work permanently in the Dominican Republic obtaining residency status is required (and recommended) to foreigners.

The procedure at the Immigration department usually takes 3 to 4 months before provisional residency is granted for a period of one year.  After the expiration of the provisional residency, the applicant may file his/ her permanent residency at the Immigration department.

The following documents are required for a residency application:

• Passport (complete and original)
• Certificate of good conduct
• Tourist card
• Birth certificate
• 8 photos (4 front, 4 profile)
• Medical examination performed in the Dominican Republic
• Evidence of solvency (bank deposit,  property titles etc.)
• Certificate of good behaviour from the Dominican Republic police
• Notarized letter of guarantee from a Dominican person or company

During the 90 day period of your Tourist Card you are permitted to drive under your own country’s driving licence.  When this period expires everyone is required to have a valid Dominican driving licence to operate a motor vehicle.  To get a Dominican driving licence you will first need your Dominican residency.

The required documents for a driving licence are:

• Dominican residency
• Driving test
• Blood test (type)
• Vision test

 For foreigners with a current valid foreign driving licence there is also a possibility to have this transferred to a Dominican driving licence eliminating the need for a driving test.
